The Milton Drain

The Milton Drain is the most visible reminder that there once was a creek in this part of Brisbane. It is also a reminder of how much the environment has been altered in the service of urbanisation. This may be a watercourse of sorts, but it has been stripped of every last vestige of naturalness.

This part of the site will explore the transformation of Western Creek into Milton Drain, and the development of the Milton area more broadly. So far I’ve created just one page — Milton: Brisbane’s western frontier — which looks at the very beginnings of Milton, and indeed of Brisbane itself.

There will be more to come, but all in good time. If you have any thoughts or insights you would like to contribute, please leave a comment below, get in touch with me or leave a comment below or in the Forum.

  1. Used to swim on my own in the Milton Drain, after school. We called it The Sewer. My parents both worked, and didn’t come home until 6. Apparently Mum never found out, though Dad suspected. I did have the sense not to put my head under though. Born in 1947; went to Milton State School.
